Frequently Asked Questions about SOS.
|
Q. What does the ticket price cover?
A. The ticket prices covers the five day conference, including all workshops and sessions. It also gets you five days of wonderful conference food. As a participant, you are also a volunteer - all participants are expected to sign up for two shifts. You will have the opportunity to sign up at rego, you can also get involved in the organisation of the conference by filling in this form.
Q. Do you need to bring tents and sleeping equipment?
A. Yes. To keep tickets prices low and in the spirit of tradition we shall be camping, you're welcome to come along and pitch a tent. For those who don't feel like camping (we appreciate it's gonna be cold!), we're working on other options. Detailed information will be available closer to the conference for registrants.
Q. Whats the weather in Canberra like in July?
A. Pretty cold! I'm not going to lie to you, it can get very cold in Canberra in July, as low as minus 2 degrees celsius at night. It will be a little warmer during the day, but still only around 10 degrees. We recommend bringing along all your woolies and warms (especially those coming from Queensland!). To help out there shall be warm spaces and lots of blankets available. Detailed information on what to bring will be emailed out prior to the conference. Meanwhile, some essential reading! - http://www.wikihow.com/Crochet-a-Hat
Q. When should I arrive at the Embassy?
A. We encourage to you arrive on Monday 30th June and we will have access to the east side of the Embassy from midday. Dinner will be provided on the night of the 30th at ANU. Please read the Protocol produced by the SoS crew before arriving at the Embassy, you are walking and camping on historic ground.
Q. How are we getting between the Embassy and ANU?
A. Good question! It's about a 30min walk, and there'll be people that will be keen for that. However, everyone who brings a car and a minibus to SOS will be encouraged to provide lifts for people between camping and the campus. We'll have a transporter beam pad where folks can wait and get lifts in either direction. We're also sourcing some bikes and of course you can take buses (though they don't run early in the morning from where we're camped).
Q. Do I have to camp? Are there other options?
A. Your ticket price includes camping at the Tent Embassy, but if you are really concerned about this for any reason, please get in touch ([email protected]) and we can try and arrange a billet for you when you are in Canberra. If you don't have a tent, make a note on your rego form and we can hook you up with someone that has a spot in their tent. Seriously though, camping at the Tent Embassy is a once in a lifetime experience, and you should seriously consider why you'd want to miss out on learning from and connecting with Elders and activists by the fireside.
Q. I'm from Canberra. Can I get a discounted ticket?
A. We reckon the ticket price is pretty damn good for five epic days of 150 workshops, five nights of parties, gigs and performances, and including all camping and food. It's got to be the cheapest festival in Australia! But we understand that you can head home to your bed if you live in Canberra. Really though, the main cost is the hire of the facilities and equipment, and this is the same if you are from out of town or from Canberra. So at the moment, no, we're not offering more discounts. If you're in serious need of subsidies though, get in touch.
